Choosing your first lawnmower or upgrading your current model is a real investment in your garden. With so many different models, makes and sizes, the choice can be daunting.
First, think about the size of your lawn:
Small lawns are on average half the size of a full tennis court (39' x 13.5' or 12m x 4m) - look at lawnmowers that have a 40cm/16" blade or less.
Medium lawns are half to one full tennis court in size (39-78' x 13.5-27' or 12-24m x 4-8m) - look at lawnmowers that have a 46cm/18" blade.
Large lawns are at least one tennis court in size (78' x 27' plus or 24m x 8m plus) - look at lawnmowers that have a 51cm blade or more.
Identifying the size of your lawn will help you to choose the most suitable lawnmower for the task.
Type of lawn:
You also need to think about the shape of your lawn - whether there are any slopes or inclines, awkward overhanging shrubs or trees, or water features which will need to be trimmed around. Different lawnmowers have features that will help you deal with these differing landscapes.
If your lawn is flat with well-maintained grass, and you like a striped lawn, look at our selection of rear roller lawnmowers. Rear roller lawnmowers are also a benefit if you want to cut close to flower borders. Cylinder lawnmowers give you a traditional stripe and such a fine finish.
You may have a section of your lawn, which is not as formal so you do not need to collect the grass. If this is the case, look at lawnmowers that collect but offer mulch or side discharge features.
If you just want to mulch, you can purchase a mulching lawnmower, so there's no need to empty your grassbox.
For rougher ground, look at our selection of rough cut lawnmowers.
If your grass is very long and overgrown, look at scythe/sicklebar mowers.
Read the specifications for each lawnmower as the heights of cut can be different. Some lawnmowers cut lower or higher than others.
